Baton Rouge Government

Baton Rouge is Louisiana's capital city. In addition to providing essential services and forums for public debate and policy, the state and local government are among the areas largest employers.

Many state government offices are located in Baton Rouge and offices are consolidating in the downtown area. This has contributed to the revitalization of downtown Baton Rouge. Our Mayor-President is Kip Holden. He is the Mayor of the City of Baton Rouge and the President of East Baton Rouge Parish. Since taking office in January 2005, he has enjoyed broad-based support from the community and has steered us through enormously challenging times. In 2008 he won re-election by a wide margin. City/Parish offices are mostly located downtown and services are also available online.

If politics is your passion, then there are many opportunities to get involved. A6 - The Austin 6 - is a grass roots organization that has thousands of members. This group was initially formed by 6 participants in a Chamber of Commerce trip to Austin, Texas to identify best practices in city government. Just being on their list serve will keep you informed about hot issues and topics in Baton Rouge.

If you're under 35 then you might want to join Forum 35. This group provides opportunities for leadership and community participation and its members also have a good time doing it.

The Baton Rouge Area Chamber also provides multiple opportunities for community involvement and their legislative agenda brings to the forefront issues of vital concern to the community. BRAC hosts issue councils and FuturePAC, a political action committee.
