University Gardens

The area north and west of College Drive between Perkins Road and LSU is often thought of as “Southdowns.”  Well, some of it is.  But there’s another neighborhood there:  University Gardens.  Think of the “Dales:” Cloverdale, Cherrydale, Myrtledale, Cedardale, Ferndale, and Hollydale. And, that area along East Lakeshore Drive where everyone goes for walks around the LSU Lakes – some of that is in University Gardens, too. What makes University Gardens different from Southdowns is the size of the lots and the prices of the homes – the lots tend to be larger and the homes more expensive.

As you drive through University Gardens what you’re likely to notice most is that it’s eclectic. There are small cottage homes on piers and small ranch homes on slabs.  There are remodeled homes, homes that have been added on to, and homes that have been torn down and new homes built in their place.  The land values are very high, upwards of $200,000 for a lot. And you have to love those old live oak trees.  They’re majestic and our community wouldn’t be the same without them.

From University Gardens you can walk to Magpie Café for breakfast, get groceries at Trader Joe’s, get a beer at Schlitz and Giggles, or a sandwich at Jimmy Johns.  You can walk to LSU (although it’s a bit of a hike but better than trying to find a parking spot on game day).  The new children’s Knock Knock Museum is up the street off Dalrymple and you can bring your dog to the Raisin’ Cane’s dog park. And who doesn’t love Trinity Episcopal Church and Day School on the corners of Stanford Avenue, Morning Glory, and Cherrydale.
